Like every night before our 12-hour multi-sport event in memory of my son Gabriel, I get very little sleep. And soon as my eyes close, my alarm starts ringing. It is still dark, I dress quickly and by the time I get to the Alabang Country Club, the night has turned into a pale blue shadow. Participants of our first event of the day are already at the pool. Then before you could take a deep breath, an orange streak cuts across the sky signaling the kind of hope a new day brings.

And that is what my son Gabriel left behind. He only lived nine short months, but years after he died, hope reigns in the hearts of the many children whose lives are now better because of the many people who support our foundation in memory of Gabriel.

Once a year, at daybreak, we celebrate the life of my son Gabriel. This year started with a swim-a-thon, then a run-a-thon, then a bike ride. Some did all three, to complete a triathlon.

This year also marked our fifth year of doing a kid’s triathlon. It’s amazing to see kids who started out with us five years ago- how they’ve grown up and how much faster they are now! Every year there are more kids participating.

The Daang Hari Barefoot Running Kids and the girls from Marillac Hills, a home for abused girls, are kids who our foundation have been supporting. They were there to join in on the fun. We had an adventure race for them then a self-defense class. After that, they had a surprise activity with the arrival of my friends Sylvia and Tonji Ramos who treated them to a bird watching session.

Me and my daughters Max and Nadine, with the Daang Hari Barefoot Running kids and their new shoes

We also launched our first shoe drive with swimbikerun.ph founder Carlos De Guzman.

The last activity for the day was our 1.6km buddy run, a fun run for any two friends, – a mother and child, friend and friend, or even, human and dog, as long as they run together. We had all kinds!

Lino and I lined up with the rest of the participants hoping to just do an easy paced jog which would just add on to our running mileage for the day.

But as it turned out, we were not the only brother-sister pair there. Ella and Donny Pangilinan took the lead from the start.

Lino noticed the two and started to pick up the pace and told me we had to give them a run for their money. I said:

“Are you crazy? They are teen triathletes! Like Ninja triathletes, you know? You and I will be like hippos trying to race with gazelles.”

So there we were, two pairs of brothers and sisters on the run – Lino and I pushing, sweating and trying to go faster, the Pangilinan’s just gliding and widening their lead. We never got close enough, but we ran with conviction. After we crossed the finish line, I joked that as official organizer of the race, I would change the distance of the buddy run next year- maybe a 21 km, because that would be the minimum distance where Lino and I would have an iota of a chance of beating the fast twitch Pangilinans.

Maiqui Dayrit came by to do a long run. He has done an ironman distance triathlon- a 3.8 km swim, 180 km bike, 42 km run- at our event every single year for the past six years and is by far our largest donor. He is doing an ironman again, but this time in Kona, at the Ironman World Champs which he qualified for at the Ironman 70.3 Philippines in Cam Sur. We will watch him and the rest of the Filipinos who qualified with pride.

And at 6pm, Hans Kristian Juan‘s arrival, after doing an all day bike, his fifth year of doing so, signaled the end of this beautiful day.

They came; they competed; they conquered! The Gabriel’s Symphony Foundation (GSF) congratulates all the winners of this year’s staging of the 12-Hour Multi-Sport Celebration held in memory of Gabriel.

This year’s winners, both in the individual, group and special categories, all received medals and gift packs from GSF. Their victory is, of course, just a bonus because the biggest ‘winners’ in this event are the hundreds of children with special needs who shall benefit from the funds raised by all participants, as well as the ever-reliable sponsors of GSF.

We wish to make special citations to recognize some of the winners for their exemplary efforts in helping GSF. They include Hans Kristian Juan who, for the 5th consecutive year, did a 12-hour bike-a-thon to raise funds for the children of GSF. Another is actor/TV host Richard Gutierrez, who won second place in the bike-a-thon, and even gamely helped us award some of the winners.

Lastly, we would like to thank a number of loyal SuperTriKids participants who have been joining our event in the last 3-to-5 years, namely: Christine Manalo, Andie Santos, Gabbie Santos, Joey Santos, and Teri Santos (they have been joining for 5 straight years); Stephanie Manalo (she has been joining for 4 straight years), and Jesila Mari Faustine Dejuras, Margo Manalo, Skylour Manalo, Nacho Mapa, Bea Salera and Ezekiel Noel Samson (they have been joining for 3 straight years). We couldn’t thank you enough kids — and of course your parents — for choosing to always be a part of the annual GSF celebration!

The 9th Gabriel’s Symphony Foundation’s (GSF) 12-Hour Multi-Sport Celebration In Memory of Gabriel was successfully staged last September 3, Saturday, from 6am to 6pm at the Alabang Country Club in Muntinlupa City.

The annual fundraiser held in memory of Gabriel Rene Cayetano Sebastian, Sen. Pia S. Cayetano’s son who died from complications of a rare chromosomal disorder in 2001, has been raising funds for almost a decade to help children with special needs and indigent kids.

Triathletes and multi-sport enthusiasts, celebrities and corporate teams came and spent the day joining various sports events lined up by GSF. Many of the participants also brought along family members to cheer for them as they competed. (See complete list of winners below)

Past and present beneficiaries of the GSF were also present, including the Barefoot Running Kids of Daang Hari, girls from the Marillac Home in Alabang, officers, members and kids from the Parent Advocates for Visually Impaired Children (PAVIC), as well as young children who benefited from free surgical operation for cleft lip and palate, who were brought by their parents to the venue to personally thank Sen. Cayetano and GSF.

The mini-football tournament for kids organized by the Younghusband Football Academy was also well-attended, drawing more than 20 teams from various schools and football clubs from all over Metro Manila.

Some of the celebrities who graced the 9th GSF include popular actor and TV host Richard Gutierrez, who also joined the bike-a-thon where he won second place; Philippine Azkals stars James and Phil Younghusband, who also helped Sen. Cayetano present awards to some of the winners; the famous racing ‘Team Pangilinan’ family led by lawyer-host Anthony Pangilinan; and triathletes Arland Macasieb and Noy Jopson, Filipino elite champions of the Cobra Ironman 70.3 in CamSur in the 2011 and 2009, respectively.

Also present were GSF’s resident Ironman Maiqui Dayrit, who will bring his fund-raising efforts to the world Ironman championships in Kona, Hawaii this October; Women’s Health editor Lara Parpan; and members of the Cayetano family: Senator Alan Peter Cayetano and his wife, Taguig City Mayor Lani Cayetano; Ren Cayetano; and Barangay Fort Bonifacio Chairman and TV director Lino Cayetano .

The GSF would like to extend its heartfelt thanks to corporate sponsors which made the event a success, including Hyundai Alabang, Century Tuna, Nestlé Philippines, Smart, San Miguel Corporation, Timex, Chevrolet, Coca-Cola Foundation, Krispy Kreme, New Balance, Speedo, Alaska, and Carman’s.

Special thanks also go out to Carlos de Guzman of swimbikerun.ph who turned over 29 pairs of shoes from his website’s shoe drive efforts; to everyone who donated old pairs of jeans, shirts, jackets and books for the GSF’s ‘Recycling Depot Project’; Sifu Robert Green and his group who taught self-defense to the children using the martial arts discipline, Wing Chun; Tonji and Sylvia Ramos who took the kids to bird watching in Ayala Alabang; Coach Jojo Durias of the Younghusband Football Academy; Coach Rick Reyes of the Triathlon Association of the Philippines; Coach Ani de Leon-Brown; and Mayor Jerry Pelayo of Candaba, Pampanga.

But not … Read More

First the ‘bad’ news: Maiqui Dayrit will not be able to do his annual ‘Maiqui’s Ironman’ at the 9th Gabriel’s Symphony Foundation (GSF) multi-Sport Celebration to be held on September 3 at the Alabang Country Club in Muntinlupa.

But not to worry. The good news is that Maiqui has committed to bring his advocacy over to Kona, Hawaii where he will compete alongside the world’s best triathletes at the 2011 World Ironman Championships this coming October 8!

Dayrit, who has been doing an annual Ironman fundraiser since 2005 for the kids of GSF to celebrate his birthday, qualified for the World Championships when he placed third in his age-group at the 3rd Cobra Ironman 70.3 held in Camarines Sur last August 14.

Showing his finest form yet at the annual triathlon event, Maiqui finished the course with a time of five hours, three minutes and 47 seconds (5:03:47), earning him third place honors in the men’s 40-44 years age-group. Over 1,000 athletes from 28 countries participated in this year’s edition of the Cobra Ironman 70.3, which consisted of a tough course of a 1.9-km swim, 90-km bike and 21.1-km run.

“I’m turning 40 on September 11. Raising funds for the kids would be the perfect way to celebrate the big ‘Four-Zero’ but I unexpectedly qualified for Kona last Sunday August 14!” Dayrit shared in an interview.

He added: “Unfortunately, my aging body might not recover in time for Kona [if he does an Ironman at the GSF event on Sept.3] so I’ve decided to take the Gabriel’s Symphony with me to Kona this year!”

And a plea for his sponsors and friends: “I hope my loyal sponsors understand and still donate. I really can’t let the kids down!”

This means that Maiqui will swim 3.86 kms., bike 180.25 kms. and run 42.195 kms. in Kona not only to mark a personal milestone, but also to carry the Philippine colors and continue his advocacy to help differently abled children!

It should be recalled that on his fifth ‘Maiqui’s Ironman’ last year, Dayrit already surpassed the P1-million mark in terms of donations and pledges for the GSF. Reaching the finish line at past six in the evening, Maiqui was greeted and cheered by friends and some of the children he has helped over the years. Expressing their gratitude, the children presented him with a birthday cake, card and sang him a birthday song.

Every kilometer he has worked and sweated for has been worth it, swears Maiqui, even as he looks forward to carrying on his annual Ironman this October and for years to come.

Congratulations and more power to Maiqui in Kona!

9th GABRIEL’S SYMPHONY
12-Hour Multi-Sport Celebration In Celebration of Gabriel
Saturday, 3 September 2011, 6am-6pm
Alabang Country Club, Ayala Alabang Village, Muntinlupa City

Sports enthusiasts of all ages can look forward to another day of sports events, fun-filled activities and an opportunity to help children with disabilities.

On September 3, Saturday, the Gabriel’s Symphony Foundation (GSF) will hold its 9th annual staging of the Gabriel’s Symphony’s “12-Hour Multi-Sport Celebration in Memory of Gabriel.” As in previous years, the event will run from 6am to 6pm at the Alabang Country Club in Muntinlupa City.

Organized by GSF and its main founder, Sen. Pia S. Cayetano, the fund-raiser is held in memory of her son Gabriel Cayetano Sebastian who died from a rare congenital disorder in 2001 at the age of nine months. Cayetano describes the day-long event as a celebration by family and friends of the “birthday which Gabriel never had.”

In the last nine years, the GSF has been raising funds to help differently abled children, including free surgery for those with cleft lip and palate, and providing free hearing aids to hearing-impaired children and artificial eyes to visually-impaired kids.

The GSF has also been helping indigent children develop their potentials, such as the children of Daang Hari, who have shown promise as competitive runners and athletes.

This year, the GSF has lined up various activities including Swim-A-Thon, Bike-A-Thon, and Run-A-Thon, Triathlon plus SuperTriKids Triathlon and Mile Run races, which include the Buddy Run and Walk Your Dog. For the 6th straight year, Maiqui Dayrit will raise funds by doing a full Ironman distance triathlon (3.8k swim, 180k bike, and 42.2k run).

The fundraiser will also feature the ‘Recycling Depot Project.’ Friends and supporters of GSF are encouraged to bring their old denims, magazines and children’s books on event day. Old denims will be transformed into denim shoes and sandals while old magazines will be recycled into paper bags. Old books will be donated to the ‘Let’s Read’ program of GSF and Pinay In Action for the use of indigent children in various communities.

As the ‘Ironman’ fever spreads across the nation, more and more Filipino athletes and sports enthusiasts are seriously getting into the multi-sport discipline of triathlon, which consists of swimming, cycling and running, all combined into one grueling event. A testament … Read More

As the ‘Ironman’ fever spreads across the nation, more and more Filipino athletes and sports enthusiasts are seriously getting into the multi-sport discipline of triathlon, which consists of swimming, cycling and running, all combined into one grueling event.

A testament to the growing popularity of the sport was the recent successful staging of the 3rd Cobra Ironman 70.3 in the province of Camarines Sur. The premier triathlon event – which offered to its top finishers qualifying slots to the World Ironman 70.3 Championships in Las Vegas this September, and the prestigious World (Full) Ironman Championships n Kona, Hawaii in October – lured more than 1,100 participants from the Philippines and 27 other countries.

This Saturday, September 3, triathletes of all ages and from diverse backgrounds will again converge at the Alabang Country Club in Muntinlupa City. This time, they will compete not against each other, but will raise funds and donations together to help differently-abled children – proving once more that these ‘super’ athletes do not only possess iron wills, but compassionate hearts as well.

Now on its ninth year, the Gabriel’s Symphony Foundation’s (GSF) ‘12-Hour Multi-Sport Celebration in Memory of Gabriel’ is probably the only sports event of its kind, held in September every year to mark the birthday of Senator Pia Cayetano’s son, Gabriel, who died from complications of a rare congenital condition at the age of nine months in 2001.

In the words of Sen. Cayetano, herself an avid triathlete who recently won third place honors in her age group at the 3rd Ironman 70.3 in CamSur: “This is the annual celebration that I and my friends in the triathlon community hold to mark the first birthday which my son never had. What started as a gathering of friends and family has become a full-blown multi-sport celebration that benefits differently-abled children from all over the country. Gabriel continues to live on in our memories by touching the lives of other children.”

This unique multi-sport event-for-a-cause has been raising funds for almost a decade now to finance free surgical operations for young children born with cleft lip and palate (known locally as ‘bingot’), provide free hearing aids to children with hearing disabilities, and give out free artificial eyes to visually-impaired kids.

The GSF also helps the Philippine General Hospital’s (PGH) Pediatric Nuerosurgical and Craniofacial Operating Unit, a specialized unit which performs delicate surgical operations on children born with various types of cranial and spinal malformations.

Other beneficiaries include the ‘Barefoot Running Kids’ of Daang-Hari, a group of promising young athletes from poor communities along Daang Hari Road (a popular training area for bikers which traverses Southern Metro Manila), as well as the Marillac Home for Girls in Muntinlupa City.

Among the activities lined up in this year’s edition are individual and group events, including a swim-a-thon, bike-a-thon, run-a-thon, and triathlon, as well as the Super Tri Kids triathlon. It will also feature mile run ‘fun’ races, including the ‘Buddy Run’ and ‘Walk Your Dog’ contest.

Triathlete Maiqui Dayrit, who has already raised more than P1 million in donations in the last five years by doing a full Ironman distance (3.86-km. swim, 180.25-km. bike and 42.195-km. run) at the annual event, will skip this year’s edition to focus on an equally lofty objective. Having qualified for the 2011 World Ironman Championships when he placed third in his age group in CamSur, Dayrit has decided to bring over his act to Kona, Hawaii this October, where he will continue to raise donations through his ‘Maiqui’s Ironman,’ even as he competes with the world’s best triathletes. Already, donations have started pouring in for GSF’s resident Ironman.

Meanwhile, the web portal swimbikerun.ph – considered as one the top online resource sites of Filipino triathletes and multi-sport enthusiasts – decided to organize a shoe donation drive for the children being assisted by the GSF. Asked how he got the idea for the shoe drive, swimbikerun.ph’s Carlo De Guzman, also a triathlete and tthree-time Ironman finisher, explained: “If there’s one thing that we multisport junkies have lots of, it’s old shoes and race singlets right? Why let it rot in your closet when someone can still use it?”

Other prominent personalities who have joined events or supported past editions of the event include, among others, businessman-triathlete Fernando Zobel de Ayala, Fred Uytengsu of Alaska Milk, Ernie Lopez of ABS-CBN, David Charlton of David’s Salon and Mark Ellis of Fitness First, Philippine Daily Inquirer columnist Tessa Prieto Valdes, Sports Unlimited hosts Dyan Castillejo and Marc Nelson, TV host Drew Arellano, The Bull Runner’s Jaymie Pizzaro, lawyer and host Anthony Pangilinan, actress Bianca Gonzales, and World Bantamweight Champion Nonito Donaire Jr.

This Saturday’s fundraiser will likewise feature the ‘Recycling Depot Project.’ Friends and supporters are encouraged to bring their old denims, magazines and children’s books on event day. Old denims will be transformed into denim shoes and sandals, old magazines will be recycled into paper bags and old books will be donated to the ‘Let’s Read’ program of GSF for the use of children in poor communities.

Online registration for the 9th Gabriel’s Symphony is ongoing. Those interested may register online and view event details and mechanics at www.gabrielsymphony.com or email blessings@gabrielsymphony.com for more information.

The multi-sport website SWIMBIKERUN.ph recently launched its ‘Shoe Drive Part 2’ campaign for the children-beneficiaries of the Gabriel’s Symphony Foundation (GSF). Considered as the online ‘go-to source’ of triathlon and multi-sport enthusiasts, SWIMBIKERUN.ph was created early this year and is being managed by triathlete and three-time Ironman finisher Carlos de Guzman. De Guzman thought of doing his share to help differently abled kids and indigent children by calling on members of the triathlon community to donate their sports shoes. He is also urging triathletes to forego their usual Saturday long training on September 3 and instead sign up for the various events lined up at the 9th GSF Multi-Sport Celebration to be held in Ayala Alabang Village. De Guzman himself has registered for the 9am bike-a-thlon.

SWIMBIKERUN.ph will also put up a booth at the venue which will display shirts and stickers for sale. This will be the second shoe drive organized by De Guzman and his friends. Only last July, SWIMBIKERUN.ph was able to collect in just three days 41 pairs of shoes and dozens of old race singlets which were donated to the Tuloy Foundation.

What made him come up with the idea? De Guzman wrote on his website: “Why a shoe drive? Because if there’s one thing we multisport junkies have lots of, it’s old shoes and race singlets right? Why let it rot in your closet when someone can still use it?”

From your GSF family, thank you and more power to Carlos and SWIMBIKERUN.ph!
